2005 Audi S8 V10 More Limo than Lambo

Audi S8 may have sourced V10 engine from Lamborghini, but it was not the answer either an Audi or a BMW M5 Merc S55 AMG. When all is said and done, just not a big hitter. There, I've said it. Now we can move on to what the problem. Those who bought S8 when the sale occurs in June around £ 70,000 will find they have bought one of the most satisfying big saloons ever conceived.

It is tempting to be tempted with a title like 'Lambo engine' and '444bhp 'but this is not what the S8 around. The S8 is the distance disappeared for no apparent reason, but it is about how far the performance of the sample can not be controlled, yet delivered with. This is a Bengal tiger in a cage that is very strong - strong but not more colossally can bite your arm rather than one's marmalade Mog. Above all the S8 is about to have, even more than it is about driving.

You see, I was tempted by the Lamborghini thing, forgetting that it was the Gallardo has Audi engine, and not vice versa. And yes, I'm hoping it will explode into S55 AMG autobahn as I go not two weeks ago.

I had no right to think of things like that because the Merc is £ 20,000 more expensive, but that the risk of Audi running when the wheels out an 'S' badges and began sprinkling Lamborghini says the communication.

But the numbers are not immediately disclose the fact surprising. Although V10 was bored out to 5.2 liters, power had been pegged back from the Gallardo's 520bhp to 444bhp it. Audi engineers say it is necessary to reshape the torque curve to something more practical for owners who will use them as a limousine S8s most of the time.

But one grim indeed admitted that a large number of machines that all versions have the Lamborghini chapter on their toes. Having a £ 398 ft at 3500rpm is impressive in sound isolation (and beat the Lambo bike by 22 pounds feet), but the bar is set by a supercharged AMG E and S-class Mercs are registering more than £ 500 ft

However, what really degrading the performance of the S8 to the change of life is the only life-affirming, of all things heavy. Are you sure S8, with lightweight construction and lightweight aluminum spaceframe aluminum body, really heavy 30 pounds more than a big old S55AMG with steel monocoque and the panel? That's right. Or that the same while aluminum Jaguar XJR may only 400bhp, it was also an amazing 281kg lighter? You can stack a family of four to the XJR and will weight less than S8 empty.

So put the S8's ability to hit 62mph from rest in 5.1sec, 5.3sec compared with Jaguar, to the traction of four-wheel drive system (for re-S8 to send 60 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels instead of the settings used Audi 50:50) and not inferior power-to-weight ratio.

Indeed, we must remind ourselves that this is not only far from the fastest car in the class, not even the fastest in class A8 - W12 A8 at a cost of just over £ 3500, and claimed to have identical performance, but with a 6.0-liter engine has a useful torque advantage - which means the best S8 can expect is a dead heat.

But we must not allow ourselves to be diverted by these issues. What car, let alone that Audi, can be judged by such bald statistics alone? And as my time in the S8 passed away so, even though the weather dirty, crowded roads and tight schedules, whether my admiration for subtle charm began to blossom.

I liked the fact that S8 was traveling at least no worse than the standard A8. Maybe a little better. At steady 100mph, limousine interior is calm and while I do not care at all for fast italicised S8, the rest of the cabin, from carbon and aluminum dash fillet into sports seats supportive, creating the right tone from the sports luxury.

And then there's the machine. I would rather listen to a good V10 on the V12s. I found quite interesting offbeat thrum and this one, with a neat low speed manners and cultured rev roared, is one of the best.

Not on your bottom as in the Gallardo, but Audi has been assessed both S8 and configure the character according to the perfection of the machine. Keeping your feet on the floor and pounded through changes at full speed through the paddle wheel is addicted to pursue, so smooth was the noise and so strong push.

Oh yes. Do not mistake me, because this car is fast: not for the first time Audi seems easy to forget to install speed limiters in pre-production car and I found a limited stretch of autobahn and quiet long enough to know it's still interesting hard at 170mph, a speed at where the only other real competition, the Maserati Quattroporte, surrendered. Thank the class-leading aerodynamics for it.

Finding some curves and S8 do not feel sportier than other A8s, but still far from the indulgences offered by the rear-drive mob, although lower ride height and stiff springs. Like all two-ton car, preferably in the corners faster, and if you can find room to crank it more at a decent speed, you will find quietness, impressive grip, traction seemingly limitless, and of course, understeer .

Steering wheel, with a slightly raised gearing, typically Audi: precise, direct and alleged lack of feeling. Test car was also equipped with ceramic brakes £ 5500 which, frankly felt the same way as other A8s steel items, but should last the life of the car and dropped the load with a very useful point of 7kg.

This is most easy to determine the S8 with what is not. As I said earlier, it was not a good rival for M5 or S55. Not super stealthiest world also does not mark a major shift in thinking from Audi. Like all fast Audi, RS4 and even, it is most comfortable in the role of an efficient and effective land coverer, and while I have cursed the boring people to practicality and feasibility of this approach, I felt reluctant to do the same thing here.

What is the S8 is carried out to develop the already strong talent from the already desperately pulled A8. It takes all modesty, style and taste, and given it an advantage. While others might be faster and some may even more fun, the S8 without a doubt the only large German sedan with a legitimate claim to be cold.

In an age where saloons are now considered the things the coolest on the road, that some claim to fame. For those who are shopping for a car like this, which tends to attract to prove as an argument in support as the amount of any additional encouragement to others boast they might consider. And if they are tipped on the edge and into my hands, for one, would not blame them for a moment.
