Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
A revised 2010 version of the range-topping retro Mustang.
External GT500 got a few small tweaks to the classic Mustang shape, especially the larger cap bumps, bigger wheels and twin racing stripes.
The theme continues in (a line in the chair and gearlever), and in other places the cabin has been improved with better materials and a streamlined design.
GT500 same mechanical use 5.4-liter supercharged V8 as before, but with power increased to 540bhp and torque to 510 pounds ft. That's according to the specifications of a limited-edition GT500KR (King of the Road).
While Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) is also sharpening suspension settings, it is not extended to replace the Mustang's ancient live axle rear suspension.
How does it feel?
Simple yet entertaining. At the moment it possible to send power to the rear wheels on a large scale that GT500 is fast - fast 540bhp impossible, but certainly fast enough.
This also sounded sensational. While Bathurst is all VXR8 supercharger whines, the GT500 more about V8 warble. And when you return from the throttle gently invaded it appears. The problem is, even with the help of two stage ESP system, the GT500 will break traction very easily - although, for one thing, which adds a sense of opportunity.
For such muscle cars, shipping surprisingly easy to live together. Light clutch action and shift the right and without any practical mechanical. In general, this is the same unit used in the Corvette, except that the action is significantly more satisfactory in this application. One contributing factor is a beautiful touch of classic white billiard ball gearknob.
In another case a small cottage but is an important step forward. According to the standards of most European cars, fit and finish was poor, but with a good touch screen sat-nav and stereo and some consistency in the design, it is now accepted Mustang. Ford also added 'mood lighting' - that would be fine, except that the 'mood' Ford tapped for best described as a 'provincial nightclub'.
In handling terms GT500 always entertaining but basic, and this latest version will not change that summary. This was enhanced - there are now more steering feel and better body control - but by the standards of modern sports car GT500 lack sophistication. Similarly, travel a little more subtle, but it was the rear axle is still struggling with corrugated roads.
All this from the GT500 stop fun to drive. If you have enough room to play with, it was frankly hysterical, but you need a certain mindset.
Should I buy one?
It depends on what you are looking for. Technical Porsche Cayman and the BMW M3 cars far more accomplished, and there are many others we would recommend before the Mustang.
However, if your soul after that, GT500 is difficult to fault. In the U.S. it sells for $ 46,325, and the cost of imports to the UK (Ford did not sell them officially) what you're looking at about the same rate in sterling. At that price, you'd better believe that your soul wants.
