250 is the latest Megane Renaultsport Megane Cup heat, and this is our first opportunity to try one of the roads in the UK.
At the international launch we drove the more expensive Sport model, but equipped with an optional Cup chassis, here even though we sampled more basic version of the Cup, which is £ 1000 cheaper than the Sport and including rigid chassis, tires and the wider mechanical limited slip differential as standard.
In the Cup misses a few pieces of standard equipment on the Sport, but still got air conditioning, rear parking sensors and a decent stereo.
RenaultSport very different from existing products previously. More mature and less than delinquents. Initially it was more than a little disappointing, because even though it was clear that Megane RS is no shortage of ability, you wonder if it would be quite entertaining. Certainly do not have the closeness of the Ford Focus RS, the Megane engine less punchy from low revs, and the handling is less playful.
But with the miles and intimacy is not hard to fall for the charm Megane. You just need to get my head around what Renaultsport have tried to achieve with the car, which is to produce hot-hatch, which focuses on speed control and not entertainment. It will not be for everyone - but for those who get a kick out of driving cars that accurate and precise Megane has a lot to offer.
This does not feel like a hot hatch type was made for a traffic light grand prix, was not driven home more tidy and efficient (and fast) on the challenging road.
And will not matter how bumpy the road, because although the Cup chassis firmly, firmly enough that even small imperfections have the body moved, faced with sharp edges or large bumps showing surprising resiliency Megane great body coupled with the control.
For quick blast on the road is still possible to focus on a better car, but the Megane car track not only faster (though its strength deficit, in a straight line above 60mph is not much in it), but also more entertaining. This produces more grip, less nose heavy and will last longer before it needs new tires and brakes.
