It's a Polo, equipped with more powerful of two 1.6-liter diesel engine options available. We've tasted 74bhp oilburner; here we drove a little more muscular 89bhp stablemate. Both share a 1.6 diesel engine emissions and economy combined figures of 65.7mpg and 112g/km CO2 resepctively. As we have previously concluded, if not subtle new Polo and diesel engines are not the most comfortable of bedfellows. This engine is vocal, and even in the form of 89bhp is not really flexible, especially around the city, only to feel a strong motor when using the bottom quarter of throttle pedal travel, so you feel like it was working hard to make progress. That is to say, this is the highway for more than capable browser and can return an impressive economy, with mpg figures in the mid to high 50s easily accessible.
