It's Alfa Romeo's 3-series and A4 rival, was given an injection of fresh poke. Or more precisely, the direct injection of fresh poke, thanks to a new machine that promises to be a mainstay of the entire range of Italian companies for several years.

1750 TBI unit has turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing between the technical arsenal. In this 159 Sportwagon, this unit produces only 197bhp from 1742cc. More tellingly, it also musters only 236 pounds ft from 1400rpm.

That was enough, Alfa's claim, to take the cart 159 from 0-62mph in 7.9sec, and the maximum 146mph. Moreover, CO2 emissions of 194g/km mean 1750 TBI are some bands at lower company car tax than the old 2.2 JTS petrol model. And you only need service every 21,000 miles.

All the impressive statistics will be meaningful if it has been striking new engine weak spots in the torque curve, or if it proved thrashy. But in reality it was just the opposite; the £ 236 ft low commendably not arrive, but you can rev to 5500rpm before the unit began to tighten. Torque curve was very flat, offers throttle response is very good in one of the six-ratio gearbox.

Refinement is very good, even if you choose to play with a red line, which in 1750 remained far from subtle and unpleasant tone. And once you're on the highway cruising speed of just faded into the background, despite the relatively short six equivalent equipment at 3000rpm in sixth highway quick steps.

159's chassis is no spring chicken, but it was enough to hold his own. The steering is direct and communicative enough, and the body roll well contained; be empty, smooth, flowing cross-country routes, there are pleasures to be had here.

Specifications are also relatively generous; the range-topping car we test a mustache IT costs more than £ 26k, but for that you get heated sport leather seats, sports suspension, 19in wheels, sports steering, Brembo brake calipers, rain, dusk and condensation sensors and Bluetooth connectivity.

Who lived up to the promise shown during the 1750 continental launch last summer, because of that, but the 159 is known to remain weak; the way, while usually quiet, can get a little thrashy for large holes - although the suspension and wheels on the T1 may not help in this field.

Style fascia, with a deep-cowled instruments is growing fast and very good aluminum trim, but the stock black plastic Alfa do the rest before a delicious cabin.

And while the gearbox is slick when it was warm, it's a bit nuggety on winter mornings. Short boot capacity of the C-class estate, A4 Avant and the 3-series Touring, too, and rear legroom is still lacking.
